London, England: Public Rally for Oromo Human Rights and Freedom – September 13, 2013

The Oromo Community in the UK organized a public protest (rally) to protest and expose crimes against humanity by the current regime in Ethiopia, and seek justice for the victims. This protest aims to inform the international community not only to stop aiding the perpetrators, but also hold them accountable for planning and carrying out sustained crimes against humanity on the Oromo people.

Over the past two decades, thousands of unarmed civilians: students, human rights activists, political figures of all age, have been subjected to uninterrupted extrajudicial killings, mass arrests, tortures, kidnapping and disappearances etc. The recent killing of Tesfahn Chemeda, who was kidnapped in Kenya after being extradited back to Ethiopia, is one tragic example. Alemayehu Gerba was gunned down in the same way as Tesfahun while in prison. The continued harassment of Muslim community and killings of people in Kofele and other parts of Ethiopia demonstrated the scale of government brutality against the people, and its obsession to control and lead through its agents even in the faith groups – which has already been proved in the Orthodox church since the regime assumed power.

Hundreds of Oromo students have been killed, thousands of Oromo political activists, such as Mr. Bekele Gerba and Mr. Olbana Lelisa, were jailed for trumped up crimes while many others were killed. The mass dismissal of Oromo students from schools and the eviction of peasants from their livelihood, and the influx of Oromo refugees, who are arriving in Yemen in tens of thousands each month, is a worrying sign showing the unbearable yolk of repression that could ignite civil unrest in the country sometime soon. It is noteworthy that even refugees are hunted down like animals in neighboring countries and beyond. In the same way as Tesfahun Chemeda, many have been tracked down and harassed; others are killed in countries where they sought asylum including in Kenya, Somalia and South Africa.

The political, economic and social mess the regime has created a situation whereby it can’t hand over power through democratic mechanisms without holding its officials accountable for their crimes. TPLF cadres and its supporters are given exclusive control over political power, have preferential treatment in business and the entire economy of the country but at the cost of others. It is time to act before it is too late and let the international community know the extent of the crisis.

All who stand for justice and respect of human rights and freedoms of the oppressed people, and wish to see the end of this repression shall come out and take part in this rally. “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Remembering the past to advance the Oromo struggle forward

The Oromo people, the single largest ethnic group in the Horn of Africa, with the third widely spoken language in Africa after Arabic and Hausa, were incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire in the second half of the 19th century by successive conquests undertaken by Abyssinian emperors. Prior to the conquests, the Oromo, a nation of the free, elected their leaders democratically according to the Gadaa system, one of the egalitarian systems they contributed to the world civilization. The British diplomat Walter Plowden remarked that ‘Gadaa is superior among republican systems’ and Gadaa government “as pure as a republic can exist.” Similarly, an Eritrean anthropologist, Asmarom Legesse, described Gadaa as “the most astonishing and instructive turns [in] the evolution of human society.” Bulatovich, who traveled through the Oromo land, described Oromo’s republican system as “the peaceful, free way of life, which could have become the ideal for philosophers and writers of the eighteenth century [Europe], if they had known of it.”

In addition to their democratic systems, the Oromo are known for their hard work. A U.S. diplomat, Robert Skinner, who visited Ethiopia by the beginning of the 19th century, dubbed the Oromo as a “race of excellent intelligence … industrious farmers and safe citizens.” Having extensively traveled throughout the Horn of Africa, Augustus Wylde came to a conclusion that “No harder worker than the [Oromo] peasant of Abyssinia exits,” and in contrast, he also put that “No more truculent, worthless, conceited, lazy, useless creature than the Abyssinian soldier.”

In addition to their hardworking etiquette, the Oromo are a peace-loving and good neighborly society, who invented a mechanism for en masse assimilation of aliens, even including their antagonists. Famous for their peace-loving manners and ubiquitous peace rituals, the British anthropologist Paul Baxter referred to the Oromo as a people of “a river of blessing.” Professor Donald Levine described the Oromo as sociable, tolerant, democratic, egalitarian, welcoming, and respectful, and communal, and he found Oromo qualities antithesis to Amara qualities of secrecy, suspicion, individualism, and authoritarianism. The Oromo also have such enormous love for trees, mountains, and rivers that helped them to develop such a pervasive concept of honor and respect for mother earth.

Inasmuch as the Oromo valued congenial environment with their neighbors, they were intrepid warriors who defended their land, resources, and dignity against invaders for centuries before the European firepower changed the regional power equilibrium. Fascinated by Oromo’s productivity and awesome military formations, some European missionaries, who visited Northeast Africa prior to the Scramble for Africa, were convinced that the Oromo would play a central role in the future of the Horn of Africa. Whereas the German Protestant missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf equated the Oromo to “Germans of Africa” if they would embrace Christianity, the French Catholic missionary Martial de Salviac likened the Oromos to the “French of Africa if they would be converted to Christianity.” Despite the fact that the Oromo demonstrated that they were bearers of indigenous civilizations and prodigious workers, the Oromo failed to pass the litmus test of the so-called civilization, Christianity. No wonder then, even, for admirers of the Oromo (such as Krapf and de Salviac), the ability of the Oromo to administer themselves and succeed as a nation was viable only through the agency of Christianity.

During the European Scramble for Africa, unlike the rest of Africa, the major contenders for the continent, Britain and France, reached a deadlock in the race for controlling Northeast Africa. The modus operandi of the time favored dealing with a certain king or patriarch than dealing with egalitarian (and a polycephalous) societies like the Oromo – whose Executive Branch holder changes periodically. In proxy battles for an influence in the area, therefore, the Imperial Europe provided weapons for various warring Abyssinian factions – considering that the Christian Abyssinians were custodians of “superior” civilization and excellent slave dealers (as well as looters), who were capable to pay Europeans back for their death machines. Proximity to the sea, hierarchical nature of the Abyssinians, the slave trade and Christianity helped the Abyssinians to acquire an enormous amount of weapons from Europe.

At this junction, the destiny of the freedom loving Oromo nation, who were masters of their destiny and “did not recognize [external] authority other than the speed of his horse, the strength of his hand, and the accuracy of his spear,” as Bulatovich described, began to change like elsewhere in Africa.

When Europeans turned the Christian Abyssinia into a storehouse of modern weapons, the biggest beneficiary from the floodgate of the weapons was none other than Emperor Minilik, who amassed 1 million rifles and 47 million cartridges of ammunition. Emboldened by possession of a formidable firepower, the juggernaut Minilik declared to the world that Abyssinia had officially joined the Scramble for Africa. “I have no intention to being an indifferent spectator,” arrogantly proclaimed Emperor Minilik, “while far distant powers make their appearance with the intentions of carving out their respective empires in Africa.” His lust of conquest was unmatched, “I shall endeavor, if God gives me life and strength, to reestablish the ancient frontiers of Ethiopia up to Khartoum, and as far as Lake Nyanza with all the [Oromos].” The emperor vigorously led the Abyssinian expansion into the lush green of the south to export the Abyssinian “civilization,” the civilization that brought an industrial scale massacres, the slave trade, and destruction of Africa’s indigenous civilizations.

Therefore, Emperor Minilik’s army, which is often compared to the biblical locust of Egypt because of its looting and destruction, conquered Oromiya with unparalleled and untold brutalities and destruction. While the Abyssinian marching army destroyed the green lush of Oromiya, the conquests over-flooded Finfinne, his capital, with food-surpluses in the middle of an apocalyptic famine — Kifu Qan. Indeed, Finfinne was nicknamed a “Noah’s Ark” since it was the only escape from the famine, which ravaged ninety percent of cattle population of the country and consumed countless of human lives. Once the masters of Northeast Africa, the Oromo lost their land to Abyssinian settler warriors, sold into slavery, robbed of their resources, and denied the right to enjoy their culture. Lost their dear self-identification, the Oromo were called by a derogatory appellation, and even worse, their humanity was questioned. The empire portrayed the Oromo as “invaders” (or a “curse” of God to spoil beautiful alpines of Abyssinia), who subdued once the Christian Abyssinia recovered from her lapse into savagery they brought. These were the trends and behaviors subsequent Abyssinian rulers followed and strengthened.

The Oromo never accepted an alien rule imposed on them and continued to resist their incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire. They fought in different ways in various regions of Oromiya against the occupiers who ransacked their property and derided their culture. Nevertheless, the once remarkable military formations of the Oromo hardly matched the Abyssinian army armed with European death machines. De Salviac described a scene in Oromiya during the conquests as “the theatre of a great massacre,” and “the charming Oromo land … ploughed by the iron and the fire; flooded with blood and the orgy of pillage.” Bulatovich termed it, “[T]he dreadful annihilation of more than half the population during the conquest took away from the [Oromo].” Emperor Minilik, who managed to defeat a European power using the European technology, liquidated a solid five million Oromo, half of the entire Oromo population, at the time, according to accounts of European travelers and missionaries.

The Oromo, a nation of brave warriors, put a ferocious resistance against Abyssinia, an empire in which a political, cultural, economic, social, and religious power expressed through the use of gun, the naftanya system. Against all odds, the Oromo survived the Abyssinian genocide and ethnic cleansing. Alike a Phoenix, the Oromo always regenerate and rise from the ashes, with more vigor, whenever the Abyssinians believed that they had broken their indomitable spirit. However, the enemy tried, for more than a century, to destroy the Oromo culture and Oromummaa, the Oromo are still the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, and their once banned language is still one of the biggest languages spoken in the African continent. As a young activist Toltu Tufa said, “A language whose music and words were once forbidden still wets the tongues of [over] 40 million people.” This happened because of uninterrupted struggles of brave sons and daughters Oromiya.

During the Napier’s conquest, the Wallo Oromo played a crucial role in defeating Emperor Tewodros, a symbolic founder of the modern Abyssinian Empire, by laying siege to his citadel and turning him a virtual captive in the middle of the very people whom he considered “invaders” and vowed to “throw” from Abyssinia. There is a contentious claim that brave warriors of an Oromo queen killed the emperor, while he holed up, in the fortress, and hunkered down for writing lengthy letters to seek an honorable settlement with Napier. No wonder then the British forces came to Tewodros’ hideout without a single gunshot except storming the fortress. Whereas Tewodros butchered all Oromo captives (he released all non-Oromo prisoners), the Oromo, who surrounded the fort on the call of General Napier, showed an extraordinary sense of humanity and civility. They neither killed nor did they harm a single of Tewodros’ soldiers, running in disarray, except surrendering and handing them to the British forces.

In 1870 and 1880s, the Wallo Oromo resisted the occupation, massacres, forceful conversion and evictions of Emperor Yohannes, who died in the hands of Mahdist Sudan while he was trying to execute the British colonial agenda in return for a piece of land in Eritrea and weapons to reinforce his iron fist control on the Oromo country of Wallo.

Equally, the Arsi Oromo checked the Minilik army relentless onslaughts for six years, in which about 100,000 gallant Oromo heroes and heroines lost their dear lives in defense of the motherland. At one time, Minilik and his wife barely managed to escape in one of the ferocious battles. To break their resistance, the conquering army engaged in amputations, beheading, summary executions, and poisoning of water wells. If it is not called genocide, that it was, Arsi peasants have coined a term for the sheer slaughtering of the conquerors, “warradomsa,” a people who kill until a knife turns dull.

When the Minilik army tried to occupy the Oromo country of Ittu and Humbanna, the Oromo annihilated them on their first bid until the Abyssinian marching army of 10,000 riflemen defeated the poorly organized peasant army at the Battle of Calanqo.

During the Italian conquest, the rebellious Rayya Asabo defeated Hayla Sillase’s army and killed his minister of war in March 1936. The uprisings of Oromo peasants, in different parts of Oromiya, dealt a deathblow to the staggering Empire before even the Italians controlled Finfinnee. In fact, thirty-three Oromo leaders sought recognition and protection from the abeyant international community after forming the ‘Western Oromo Confederation.’

Whereas the Italian occupation, as Professor John Markakis said, “brought welcome relief from the burden of Ethiopian rule to the people of the periphery,” Hayla Sillase re-instituted the same exploitative systems when he restored to power with British bayonets. The Oromo in Bale, Borana, Hararghe, Guji, Jimma, among others, rose to fight the restoration of the naftanya system, but only to be crushed by contingents of British army from Kenya and Sudan.

The Era of Modern Resistance and General Waqo Gutu
Whereas the resistances of the Oromo were sporadic and ephemeral in nature, the Oromo began to put organized and unified civic and military resistances in the early 1960s, which gave rise to the birth of the modern Oromo consciousness and nationalism. In 1963, when the exploitation and abuses of Hayla Sillase administration went through the roof, the Oromo rose to assert their right for equality, freedom, and self-determination. The year witnessed the birth of Maccaa-Tuulamaa Self-help Association and the Oromo student activism for the betterment of the lives of their masses. In the same year, the Oromo in Bale region, in a close alliance with various Oromo and Somali clans, under the leadership of General Waqo Gutu Usu, launched a military resistance to check the exploitation and oppression of the empire. Born in 1924, from the Rayitu clan of Arsi, in the Holy City of Madda Walabu, Bale, General Waqo sparked the armed resistance of the Oromo people against the Ethiopia army, the most mechanized army in the entire African continent. His fighters either controlled or made ungovernable most part of the southern Oromiya in the Ethiopian Empire for a decade until they yielded to the military pressure in the early 1970s, having placed the Oromo struggle in the political map of Ethiopia.

The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the Oromo’s struggle to end the era of political oppression, cultural subjugation, and economic exploitation, and the era to reclaim our past glory. Thanks to sacrifices of our heroes and heroines, who gave us a privilege and an honor they never had, today, we learn in Afaan Oromoo, the Oromo language, and proudly call ourselves we are the Oromo. Proud of our identity, we, the Qubee generation, are, at a special milieu, to realize what our ancestors started a century ago, to end tribulations and exploitation of our people, poverty and disease. This journey begins by celebrating the legacy of those heroes and heroines, who gave their dear lives in pioneering the struggle of our people. A Holocaust once survivor said, “Without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, [and] no future.”

On October 20, 2013, in Minnesota, the Oromo will come together in a commemoration of the 50th year anniversary of the modern Oromo military struggle against the Ethiopian rule.

On the commemoration, we sing songs of freedom, emancipation, unity, love, happiness, better tomorrow, and above all, we vow to finish what our heroes and heroines started more than a century ago. Please join us as we shall celebrate the legacy of our heroes and heroines, and reflect on their significance for this generation to advance the Oromo cause.

Transitional De Jure New Ethiopia As De Facto Great Oromia

Since the prompt response I gave to one Ethiopianist Oromo, who tried to persuade Oromo nationalists so that we accept Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet (Ethiopian nationalism) at the cost of Oromia and Oromummaa (Oromian nationalism), http://gadaa.com/oduu/20052/2013/05/31/why-not-greater-oromia-instead-of-ethiopia-a-response-to-dr-fikre-tolassas-open-letter/, I have received several protest and few support letters from some Oromo nationalists per e-mail. One of the reasons – raised by those who oppose the concept of Great Oromia, is that the goal of the federalist Oromo, i.e ‘democratic genuine federation of New Ethiopia,’ can not be the same as an integrative Great Oromia I suggested, but “it will be the continuation of the existing Ethiopian empire.” I personally do believe that Golden Oromia within the womb of a New Ethiopia, as planned by the federalists, is only a transitional solution on the way either to an indispensable ‘transformation of the New Ethiopia to de jure integrative Great Oromia’ or to inevitable birth of an independent Golden Oromia. But yet, the transitional de jure New Ethiopia can be considered as de facto Great Oromia, if the Oromo community from now on start to call it as such without waiting for permission and recognition from any sort of authority as well as if we really succeed in making Afan Oromo the working language of this future transitional true federation. In this short opinion, I will try to show how using Afan Oromo at this level of transitional federation can make de jure New Ethiopia be the same as de facto Great Oromia.

It is clear that only the Abyssinian elites and few culturally and linguistically Abyssinized elites from the other nations are against the future New Ethiopia/Great Oromia, also known as genuine “ethnic” federalism. This future de facto Great Oromia is actually the best compromise solution for all nations in the region in order to live together – the same as achieving both national autonomy and regional integration. The position of the Abyssinian elites regarding the New Ethiopia/Great Oromia and self-determination has made them to be unsuitable to cooperate with the elites of the other nations against the TPLF regime. The Abyssinian elites do promote unconditional unitary Ethiopia at the cost of national self-determination, which they also put as a precondition for the possible alliance to be forged between the Abyssinian democratic forces and the Oromian freedom fighters. Some Oromo nationalists tend to accept this precondition, only if the Abyssinian elites also may accept one Oromo’s precondition, i.e making Afan Oromo the only working language of the federation, instead of Amharinya. These Oromo nationalists seem to say: “let’s try to persuade the Abyssinian elites to accept Afan Oromo as the only working language in a common house, New Ethiopia/Great Oromia, as a test.” Will the Abyssinian elites then stay to be pro-Ethiopian unity and anti-ethnicity, even if Amharinya will be demoted to only a local language of the Amhara region, and if Afan Oromo will be promoted to be the only working language of the new Ethiopian federation? I am sure they will not! In case they will continue to be pro-Ethiopiawinet and pro-unity, also under this situation, as they seem to believe now, let’s then try this new version of Ethiopiawinet with only Afan Oromo, instead of with Amharinya.

After observing the imposition of Amharinya at the cost of Afan Oromo in the past more than one century, I just could not help, but think about the main mistake some of the empire leaders of Oromo origin like Ob. Qusee Dinagde and Ob. Gobena Daacee, who are adored by the Ethiopianists as the builders of the Ethiopian empire, did commit. That worst mistake was the fact that they accepted and allowed Amharinya to be the only national language of the empire they did forge, of course, at the cost of Afan Oromo. Being Oromo, if they could have managed to promote Afan Oromo as the national language of the Ethiopian empire, now the Oromo were not the ones, who should have fight for self-determination, but the others. The whole of Finfinne’s “high class society” and the other “modern” peoples in the empire would have spoken Afan Oromo as well as the whole Diaspora Ethiopians now would have spoken Afan Oromo, even all would have claimed Oromummaa (Oromo nationalism), but not Abeshanet (Abyssinian nationalism), to be an Ethiopian in this sense is almost equivalent to be an Oromo, not an Amhara as it is till now.

At present, for the Abyssinian elites to come to their senses and comprehend why we did say so, let’s look at the following fact in short. Most Abyssinian elites nowadays think they are pro-Ethiopiawinet and anti-“ethnicity,” and with that, they do think that they do have a moral upper-hand over the others, whom they accuse as promoters of ethnic politics. For them to develop another view, let’s demote Amharinya to the local language of only the Amhara region and promote Afan Oromo to be the only federal language. Until now, just based on the fact that Amharinya being the federal language, they used to talk about Ethiopiawinet, which in essence means actually Amharanet (Amhara nationalism) for they know how the Amharanization process is still going on. If we change the role of the two languages, I am sure the Oromo nationals will start to value Ethiopiawinet, which will be equivalent to Oromummaa and they will denounce “ethnicity.” Then surely, the Abyssinian elites will start to defend themselves from the possible Oromonization and will denounce Ethiopiawinet with only Afan Oromo as the federal language, and they surely will be automatically pro-“ethnicity.” So, we can see how simple it is to be a moralist without understanding the mechanism behind all what we do believe.

The Oromo nationals in this sense just asked the Abyssinian elites to accept Afan Oromo as the only federal language for the sake of neutralizing the attempt of maintaining and talking about unitary Ethiopia with Amharinya as the only working language of the federation; it is clear that the Abyssinian elites are making the Amharanization process as something normal to be accepted and lived by all nations in the region. Of course, few of the Abyssinian elites demand that the public will decide on the issue, which language should be the future federal working language. But, to ask the public decision on the future federal working language, we first need to ask the public what type of sovereignty they want to foster. The future free nations have to either say YES or NO to the possible union. Why does not the democracy of the Abyssinian elites, which we heard in their rhetoric up to now, include this decision? Some of these Habesha elites accuse the Oromo elites as if we do have grudge against Meles and Minilik. The resentment of the Oromo elites against these two leaders is fact, but not only that; unfortunately, almost all the currently living Abyssinian elites want to perpetuate the same policy of Meles or Minilik with a pretext of Ethiopian unity, thus the opposition of the Oromo nationalists is against also such modern Melesites and Minilikites.

Furthermore, some Abyssinian elites do cry foul about a possible future Oromo hegemony just because of the fact that some Oromo elites are demanding Afan Oromo be the primary working language of the future genuine federal arrangement. Those Oromo elites, who make such a demand, are not actually the promoters of an Oromo hegemony, but just to show the Abyssinina elites how the reverse of the effort to dominate the Oromo further can be painful to the Abyssinian elites, the Oromo elites say: “if Abyssinian elites want unitary Ethiopia, then they should see also what it looks like to be under the theoretical future Oromo domination replacing their own domination.” In general, why do the Abyssinian elites talk and preach democracy whereas, at the same time, they do exclude the right of the public to decide on its destiny per referendum, i.e. people having national self-determination? If they have to think democratically as they usually claim to do, then they need to know that there is no half-baked democracy.

Some Oromo elites do argue that one of the main conflict factors in the empire is the language factor. If the Abyssinian elites do disagree with this premise, then let’s try it practically: just demote Amharinya to only the Amhara region and promote Afan Oromo to the only working language of the federation. Surely, the Oromo will then accept the unconditional unity with Ethiopiawinet, they will denounce “ethnicity,” and they may tend to reject the right of nations to self-determination. Hopefully, the Abyssinian elites will then be ready to influence all their relatives to learn Afan Oromo without any objection of such situation – Ethiopiawinet with only Afan Oromo as the federal working language. If so, then the Oromo elites will be very happy if the Abyssinian elites would not prefer to fight for their national self-determination, but only struggle for democracy, unity, justice, equality, peace and prosperity. Looking back to the past of the empire and trying to judge the present, all the elites of the nations in the empire do have their own interpretation of the history and status quo. Thus, preferable to any quarel on history is an orientation to the future and ask the question: what options regarding a solution for the language conflict do we have if we want to live together in the future possible New Ethiopia/Great Oromia? Here are five possibilities:

1) union of free nations based on self-determination, all nations having their own languages in their respective national areas and using English as a common language;

2) union in New Ethiopia/Great Oromia with Afan Oromo as the only federal working language;

3) Ethiopian union/Great Oromia with five major languages (Afan Oromo, Amharinya, Af Somaal, Tigrinya and English) as the federal working languages;

4) union with two major languages (Afan Oromo and Amharinya) as the federal languages; and

5) union with Amharinya as the only federal language (similar to the status quo, which should be changed by any means as far as the Oromo are concerned)

When we look at the reality on the ground, the pro-democracy Abyssinian elites seem to prefer the fourth option. Even such Abyssinian elites started to see the fact that the fifth option is the already failed project. Several Oromo elites do suggest the first option of free nations as the best solution. But, if the Abyssinian elites do reject self-determination of nations and persist on having unconditional Ethiopian unity, then let them test the second option so that they can understand what it means to be called “an Ethiopian” in such a condition, which actually means in reality an Oromian, in contrast to the status quo, where an Ethiopian means an Abyssinian. Thus, the New Ethiopia with Afan Oromo as the working federal language, despite the possible competition with Amharinya, is the same as de facto Great Oromia because of the fact that Oromummaa will be the main content of the union. If the Abyssinian elites reject the second option, it is then expected from them to have an empathy for the Oromo elites, who are rejecting the fifth option, instead of vilifying such Oromo elites as “exclusionists,” as they do repeatedly accuse. Why should the Oromo elites be considered as exclusionists for the sake of demanding this role exchange of the two languages, whereas the Abyssinian elites are seen as inclusive, even though they are propagating the exclusive fifth option? To avoid such a language conflict, then of course, it is also possible to opt for the third option in order to be more inclusive and integrative.

Now, it is natural for us to ask, why did the TPLF promote Amharinya at the cost of Afan Oromo in the last 22 years. The answer is clear: the TPLF wants that the conflict between the two BIG nations will continue, so that it can rule further easily. It is the fact on the ground that the historical conflict between the Amhara and the Oromo is highly exploited by the Woyane in order to hinder a possible public uprising in unison against their rule. Just because of the language privilege they had, the Amhara elites are still seen as oppressive by almost all oppressed nations in the empire, including by the Oromo, even though the Amharas, nowadays, are as oppressed and exploited as the other nations under the current ruling regime. The TPLF could have solved this language conflict between Amharinya and Afan Oromo by making either both of them the working languages of the federation or by limiting both of them to their respective states and making only English as the working language of the federation.

For choosing certain language as an instrument of communication between different autonomous nations, we need to consider its economical expediency and its international usage. Till now, all the nations in the Ethiopian empire were obliged to learn Amharinya as the national language, because of the domination by the Abyssinians, who promoted Amharinya to the only federal language and who still tend to endorse it. Actually, what is clear is the reason why they do this preference; it is simply for political domination and economical advantage. Here is one example to be taken in to consideration: the Amhara elites usually try to promote unconditional unitary Ethiopia just because of the fact that they know what an advantage they do have as far as Amharinya is the working language of the empire, i.e. the melting of all nations in the empire towards being Ethiopians, which is equivalent to their identities change into being Amharas. This process of assimilating people behind the mask of Ethiopiawinet is the main intention behind their manic craving for a unitary Ethiopian state. Accordingly, they do oppose the suggested future genuine “ethnic” federation just for it undermines their language domination, and for it hinders the melting process.

Then, the question to be asked by the other nations now is: can the pro-democracy Abyssinian forces choose to settle for using the language of all nations at their respective national areas or should they be compelled to accept this right of other nations as an alternative to the conservative Abyssinian elites’ refusal of recognizing such a union based on self-determination? I know that the Woyane will accept even separations of nations to build their own independent states as soon as they sense the possible loss of power in the Finfinne palace. To compel the Abyssinian forces to accept a union based on the national self-determination, we just have to demote Amharinya to be used only in Amhara region and promote Afan Oromo to be the federal language, as I put it above. Through this measure of role-exchange between the two languages, they will see that Ethiopiawinet will not be equivalent to Amharanet (as it is now), but it will be the same to Oromummaa. In such a scenario of Oromummaa being equivalent to Ethiopiawinet, the Oromo elites will definitely start to be pro-Ethiopiawinet as well as against “ethnicity”, and then the Abyssinian elites will surely begin to defend their identity by opting for self-determination of the Abyssinian people, so that they will start to support “ethnicity” and reject Ethiopiawinet with the content of Oromummaa. This way, the Abyssinian elites can comprehend what it means to struggle for a national independence with or without a regional union.

The ongoing attempt of the Abyssinian elites to make both Afan Oromo and Amharinya the working federal languages of the future New Ethiopia is disadvantageous for the other smaller nations in the empire. The Abyssinian elites opted to this alternative just to make Amharinya again the working language of all regions, including Oromia, the option they do not have now. As far as the Oromo are concerned, Afan Oromo being the federal working language is not bad so long Amharinya will not be imposed on Oromia, but Amharinya should be the working language of only Amhara region and, of course, it can be that of the federation besides Afan Oromo. For the other nations in the empire, this may mean to learn four languages, instead of the present only three. But, I do argue that these nations need to learn only two languages: their own mother tongue and an international language – English. Why should their children be obliged to learn Afan Oromo as well as Amharinya and be stressed with such additional useless languages, whereas the Amhara children learn only Amharinya and English, being free from such stress. So, my suggestion is that all children from all nations in the future new union should have the privilege given to the Amhara children: learn only their respective national language and English as an international language.

If the Abyssinian elites come to their sense and accept the common ground for all nations – the future New Ethiopia/Great Oromia, it would have been very easy to forge an effective alliance of the Abyssinian democratic forces and the Oromo freedom fighters against the dictatorial TPLF regime. Just to clear the confusion produced by the hitherto articles on similar topics, the other names used for the genuine “ethnic” federalism are: multi-national federation; new federal democratic Ethiopia; de jure New Ethiopia = de facto Great Oromia; language-based federalism; internal self-determination; national autonomy with regional union; self-rule and shared-rule; national self determination with multi-national democracy; unity with liberty; union of autonomous nations; United States of Ethiopia; autonomous nations in federated Ethiopia; national autonomy in an integrated region (e.g. autonomous Oromia in an integrated Ethiopia) etc. In short, the best instrument to compel the Abyssinian elites so that they can accept and respect the compromise solution – New Ethiopia/Great Oromia, and to make them recognize the right of nations to self-determination is to demote Amharinya to a local language and promote Afan Oromo to the federal language.

Last but not least, such de jure New Ethiopia/de facto Great Oromia, being the known objective of the federalist Oromo nationals, I tend to accept it only as a transitional solution for the political status after getting rid of the present Abyssinian empire. This anticipated New Ethiopia is the transition to either de jure, not only de facto, integrative Great Oromia, in case all the future free nations of the current empire will agree and accept the name change from Ethiopia to Oromia, or else the birth of an independent Golden Oromia is inevitable. I think such an integrative Great Oromia, where freedom of citizens and nations will be respected, where democracy will be the rule of the political game, where Afan Oromo will be the primary working language of the union, and where Odaa, as the symbol of the Gadaa democracy as well as the sign of victory, will be the central part of the future federation’s flag, can be the very good alternative solution to the noble cause of an independent Golden Oromia. May Rabbi/Waaqa help us all accept the future de jure New Ethiopia/de facto Great Oromia as a transitional solution towards either an independent Golden Oromia or an integrative de jure Great Oromia.

Dear Friends of the Oromo People,

It is to be recalled that members of the Oromo Studies Association and participants of the various OSA conferences have been asking for OSA leadership’s active role in promoting Oromo interests, facilitating discussions among the various actors and stakeholders of the Oromo social, political, economic, and religious organizations. OSA and its leadership has been striving to achieve their objectives through reasonable means.

The Oromo people in Ethiopia are politically and economically marginalized, dehumanized, and became second-class citizens in their own home country. The suffering and injustices faced by the Oromo is largely hidden away from the international media. The Oromo voices need to be heard. The Oromo people need media that could educate, enlighten and empower through provision of timely, balanced and unbiased information. There has been efforts made by few prominent Oromo personalities and interest groups to establish Oromo-centric media. However, these efforts are being made in a piecemeal fashion and lack a broad-based, all inclusive and non-partisan approach. The Oromo people in Diaspora and back home in Oromiya need a media organization that is capable of launching a competitive news network that sustains its objectives against all the odds. It is with this objective in mind and rational that we call for actors and stakeholders, who have best Oromo interests at heart, to come together unconditionally and form a public media organization. Any efforts otherwise shall compromise the momentum which exists today among the Oromo in Diaspora to have a vibrant and viable media that puts Oromummaa and Oromo interests first.

Whereas, the Oromo Studies Association (OSA) is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization established to promote and foster studies on the history, economy, culture, health, education, politics and laws of the Oromo people;

Whereas, in the era of information technology, all-inclusive, sustainable, strong pan-Oromo media is necessary to report fundamental freedom and human rights violations committed on our people, to promote our rich cultural heritage, and to direct the consensus of our people towards a common goal;

Whereas, it is necessary to support, and to bring together, those individuals motivated by a passion of Oromummaa to create a voice for the Oromo people in different corners of the world;

Whereas, OSA is at a special position to facilitate discussion among various groups running various media that need to be unified to establish the strong pan-Oromo media;

Whereas, OSA is mandated to promote interaction and mutual understanding among Oromo, who encounter common issues of concern;

Now, therefore, OSA has decided to establish the following ad-hoc committee of eight persons comprising of former OSA presidents, prominent elders and scholars.

The Oromo Youth Self-Help Association would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for your unreserved and energizing efforts to the attainment of our August 2, 2013 colorful peaceful demonstration here in Washington, DC, and the candlelight vigil honoring the lives of our hero, Tesfahun Chemeda, and our brothers and sisters in Kofale, Arsi, who were all murdered by TPLF forces.

As a youth association, OYSA has been vigorously working on empowering the Oromo youth and trying to connect the new Oromo generation with our Oromo people here in the Diaspora and back home in Oromia. We have been participating in our community’s events and meetings in order to get acquainted with our community in Washington, DC, area. To this effect, we managed to successfully conduct two colorful protests in Washington DC on January 25, 2013 and August 02, 2013 in which the youth, along with our elders, voiced the agony of Oromo prisoners, Oromo farmers, students, and in general the misery of our people in Oromia to the world community.

These are a fraction of what Oromo youth should do for its people/community, particularly, when a given society is under a yolk of occupation/colony with a multitude of untold and endless subjugation, oppression, killing, detention, displacement, torture and living a life not worth living.

As we are witnessing again, the TPLF is out killing our innocent people, including those who are already under its captivity. The contempt they have for the Oromo people was demonstrated in its ugliest form when a prison officer laughed at the killing of Tesfahun Chemeda in a public interview.

OYSA would like to assure our people that we will do our best to alleviate the century long misery of our people in a systematic and action oriented way. In the meantime, we would like, once again, to pay our gratitude and respect for the heroes and heroines who have sacrificed their all, and taught us the path and price of freedom.

We would like your inputs and suggestions on what we can do as a youth organization in Diaspora to raise awareness of the never-ending suffering of our people. Please also help us achieve our effort of creating an International Oromo Youth Network to mobilize our youth throughout the world for the respect of human rights and attainment of our just cause.

We call upon all Oromos in Phoenix, Arizona, to join us for the candlelight vigil ceremony in memory of martyr Engineer Tesfahun Chemeda and victims of the Kofele Massacre. This vigil is an opportunity to bring communities together and commemorate the victims and their families.

Engineer Tesfahun died for justice and freedom of the Oromo people. His courage and commitment is what we all should grab and run with till victory day. That is the only way to pay him back. Let us get together and promise him that he did not die in vain. Let us announce to the world that we will not rest or stop until Engineer Tesfahun’s dream comes true. We should all come and pay our tribute and respect to such a young hero who could not live under tyranny.

Let us remember Engineer Tesfahun and victims of Kofele Massacre. Let us come and tell them we are listening.

The following is a statement from the Organizing Committee of the Dr. Ali Birra’s Oromo Music Career: 50th Anniversary Tribute Celebration (1963 – 2013) (which was held on September 7, 2013 in Toronto, Canada).

The 50th anniversary tribute celebration 1963–2013 held in the city of Toronto this past weekend on September 7, 2013 has concluded with great success.

The event, which was organized by three community organizations, Oda Relief Association of Toronto, Oromian-Canadian Society of Ottawa and Dirre-Oromos of Toronto, was well received by the audience and well attended by an estimated attendees of more than 300.

The night was kicked-off with a breathtaking moment welcoming the legendary artist entering the audience hall, accompanied by ladies dressed in Oromo cultural dresses, and the first ever song played by Dr. Ali Birra in 1963 ‘Biradha Barihe’ playing in the background by artist Muhktar and the audience join together in singing. It was a memorable moment

The night’s opening speech was delivered by the host, Obbo Abdo Alisho, who welcomed the guests and paid tribute to Dr. Ali Birra for his significant contribution to the advancement of our language, art and culture.

After a brief video clip, produced by Obbo Girma Gemeda, a highlight of Dr. Ali Birra musical career, the president of the Oda Relief Association of Toronto Obbo Zaim Ibrahim welcomed the guests and wished all participants a wonderful night.

Several guest speakers, which included prominent individuals and community leaders, paid tribute to Dr. Ali on this historic occasion.

The president of the Oromo-Canadian Association of Toronto, Obbo Kitaba Megersa, in his speech, raised the importance of Oromo artists in the Oromo national struggle in general, and that of Ali Birra in particular.

Obbo Abdulhamid Ame Kabira, an Oromo nationalist, expressed his interpretation of the true meaning of Dr. Ali Birra’s nationalist songs, and what kind of messages they were delivering in different times and situations.

The audience also heard from members of Hiriyaa Jalalaa band – the first Oromo musical band of Dr. Ali Bira — Obbo Abubakar Mohammed — chairman of the band, Obbo Ali Abdi – accordion Player, and Obbo Abdo Barento — band dance member. They recounted how they invited him to the band at a time, and paid tribute to his long musical career.

An Oromo nationalist and song writer, Aadde Makiya Abdullahi from Germany via Skype, also read her beautiful poem, which captivated the audience.

But the highlight of the event that night was the marvelous speeches given by our young Oromos, Sabrina Galmo – the daughter of the late Saleh Galmo (RIP), an Oromo artist and one of the founders of the Oromo Sports Federation in North America (OSFNA), Lensa Ali, Jalo Ismail and Urgee Urgeesa. They talked about what he meant to them and how he touched their lives. They were inspiring speeches that the audience would not forget.

The dazzling tribute performance of several Oromo, Harari and Somali artists, such as Adero Mukhtar, Shamsudin Ali, Adham Adus, Adib Abdosh, Awale Adem, Koshen, Abdo Jobir, Abdulhakim Ibsa, Abdulhakim Gorbe as well as The Young Oromo Band of Toronto – who were there to pay tribute to the legend – made the night exceptionally special.

It was the legend himself though, when he took to the stage, before the end of the event, that thrilled the audience with his wild performance playing his all times songs: Biradha Barihe, Karaan Manni Abbaa Gadaa Eessaa, Anis Biyyaan Qabaa, Afaan Oromo, and other songs, and the audience, not surprisingly, went wild.

A young Ali Birra picture with an autography of Dr. Ali – which was donated by Obbo Girma Gemeda (Lagatafo Studio) to the Birra Children Education Fund, was put on auction at the event. An astonishing $600 was raised to the foundation, and Anisa Qawwee declared the winner.

The Organizing Committee would like to take the opportunity to thank all the participants who took part in this historic event and congratulate our beloved artist Dr. Ali Birra on his 50th Anniversary celebration.

The Northern California Oromo Community will hold its Irreecha celebration on September 28th, 2013 at the Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area, 2100 Isherwood Way, Fremont, California.

Following the Irreecha celebration, the ‘Oromo First’ Community Engagement with Ob. Mohammed Ademo will be held at the following venue: 100 Hacienda Avenue, San Lorenzo, California.
